01 · Overview

The path to recognition of a Chinese diploma in Turkey

01

YÖK or MEB: which institution does your diploma go to?

In Turkey, recognition of university-level and higher diplomas is usually handled by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK); the procedure is called recognition or equivalence. Equivalence of high school and lower diplomas, on the other hand, is usually handled by the Ministry of National Education (MEB) and provincial/district directorates of national education. If you plan to do a master's degree in Turkey, work in a job requiring diploma recognition or transfer your child to a school, you should first clarify which institution is competent, because document requirements and procedures differ.

In every case, the graduation certificate, diploma and transcript obtained from China usually need to be translated into Turkish, signed by a sworn translator and notarized. The Apostille Convention has been in force for China since 7 November 2023; Chinese official documents to be used in Turkey can usually be prepared with an apostille obtained in China, replacing the old consular legalization. As for which documents require an apostille, follow the current requirements of the institution that will receive them.

Document checklist for an online YÖK application

YÖK recognition applications are currently usually made through an online system, after which a printed or original document check may be requested. Commonly requested documents usually include: diploma and graduation certificate (original and apostilled), transcript, notarized Turkish translations of these documents and passport; sometimes entry-exit records, an explanation of the length of study or course contents are also requested. Requirements may vary by degree level and field; regulated professions such as medicine, law and engineering often have additional requirements.

The above is a summary of common cases, not an official list. YÖK's regulations and system change from time to time; before applying, follow the current announcements on YÖK's official website and the notification you receive. We can translate YÖK's Turkish explanations into Chinese and compare them item by item with your documents, helping you identify documents that are missing or need to be obtained again.

Degree title, grading system, name: three translation pitfalls

Translating academic documents may look simple, but it involves many details. Field and degree titles must be consistent with the school's official English names and with other documents; for example, if the translation of degrees such as "工学学士" (Bachelor of Engineering) or "管理学硕士" (Master of Management) does not match across the diploma, graduation certificate and transcript, the evaluator may ask for clarification. The transcript must be translated in full, course by course, without omitting credits, grades and GPA, and an explanation of the grading system should be added, since China's 100-point and five-level systems differ from Turkey's grading system.

Another common issue is the name. The Chinese name on the diploma must match the romanized spelling in the passport exactly in the translation; otherwise it may be assumed not to be the same person. Turkish evaluators do not always recognize China-specific documents, such as the graduation certificate (毕业证) and degree certificate (学位证) being issued separately, or the CHSI Ministry of Education diploma registration report; the translation should state their nature in clear Turkish. CHSI reports can usually be verified online; the receiving institution decides whether submitting them is mandatory.

04

Second-translator check and the scans we need from you

Yeni İpekyolu's sworn translators translate directly from Chinese into Turkish and know the format of Chinese academic documents and common course names. After translation, a second translator checks names, dates, numbers and credits, and then notarization is arranged. For universities that ask for documents in English, we can also provide English translations. YÖK or MEB decides whether a diploma is recognized; we make sure your documents are translated accurately and clearly.

What you need to prepare: clear scans of your diploma, graduation certificate and transcript; the CHSI report (if any, with its verification code); the official English names of your school and field; the romanized name in your passport; and the document requirements of the target school or institution. The apostille is obtained in China; if you are in Turkey, you usually need to authorize a family member or an intermediary agency in China. We recommend planning this early so you do not miss the application deadline.

02 · Who it is for

People who need their diploma and transcript translated into Turkish

01

Chinese students applying to Turkish universities

For bachelor's, master's and doctoral applications, a Turkish or English translation of the high school or university diploma and transcript is usually required. Many universities accept English documents for international student applications, while some require Turkish. Follow the target school's application guide.

02

Graduates applying for YÖK recognition

To work in jobs requiring diploma recognition, Chinese diplomas usually need recognition or equivalence from YÖK. Regulated professions such as medicine, law and engineering often have additional requirements. YÖK regulations may change; follow the current announcements.

03

Students obtaining student residence

The student residence file may require translations of documents such as the acceptance letter and student certificate. Documents issued by the Turkish university are already in Turkish; those needing translation are mostly documents from China. For the exact document list, follow Göç İdaresi's (the Presidency of Migration Management) current requirements.

04

Families enrolling their children in school in Turkey

When a child transfers to a Turkish or international school, translations of study certificates and report cards are frequently requested. For transfers to Turkish state schools, equivalence is usually handled by directorates of national education. International schools have different requirements; confirm with the school first.

06 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which translations are needed for YÖK recognition?

Usually notarized translations of the diploma and transcript; in some cases an apostille and course contents are also requested. Requirements may vary by degree level and field. YÖK requirements may be updated; we can check the current announcements together before you apply.

Is the CHSI report useful?

Since the CHSI report can be verified online, many Turkish schools and institutions accept it as a supporting document. However, the institution decides whether it is mandatory and whether a translation is needed. If necessary, we translate it and indicate the verification method.

The transcript is very long; can we translate only part of it?

For official use, the transcript generally has to be translated in full; otherwise it may be rejected. Supplementary documents such as course contents can be selectively translated according to the school's request. If you are unsure, confirm the scope with the institution first.

Does my Chinese diploma need an apostille first?

The Apostille Convention has been in force for China since 7 November 2023; for Chinese academic documents to be used officially in Turkey, an apostille is usually obtained in China. The apostille is obtained in China and usually cannot be completed from Turkey. For whether it is mandatory, follow the current requirements of the receiving institution.

Do we also apply to YÖK for equivalence of a high school diploma?

Usually not. Equivalence of high school and lower diplomas is usually handled by the Ministry of National Education (MEB) and provincial/district directorates of national education; YÖK mainly deals with higher education diplomas. Still, when you apply to a Turkish university, the school also reviews your high school diploma. For the exact process, follow the current requirements of the relevant institution.

Is an English or Turkish translation needed for applying to a Turkish university?

It depends on the school. Many universities' international student programs accept English documents, while some require a notarized Turkish translation. YÖK procedures or official use usually require a Turkish translation. Check the school's application guide first; we can provide translations in both languages.

I'm in Turkey and the originals are in China; what should I do?

The translation can be started from scans; however, notarization and the apostille usually require the original document or a certified copy. Your family in China or an intermediary agency can first have the apostille done and then send the documents to Turkey. We tell you what needs to be prepared before shipping, keeping back-and-forth to a minimum.

Do you guarantee that the diploma recognition will be approved?

No. YÖK or MEB decides whether a diploma is recognized according to its own rules. We make sure the translation is accurate and well presented and check that the documents are complete, reducing the chance of returns caused by translation or document issues.
