AI interpreting

AI for everyday internal meetings, human interpreters for critical moments

Chinese-invested teams in Türkiye hold many internal meetings, training sessions and coordination calls every day. For these low-risk settings, Yeni İpekyolu (New Silk Road) sets up AI-assisted real-time interpreting and Chinese–Turkish captions to cut communication costs, while for important situations such as negotiations, contracts or external-facing speeches we recommend human interpreter oversight or a human interpreter outright.

01 · Overview

Where AI interpreting reaches its limits in a mixed Chinese–Turkish team

01

Shift briefings to AI, negotiations to human interpreters

Chinese-invested teams in Türkiye have a great deal of repetitive internal communication every day: shift briefings, production meetings, progress reports and simple training. In these settings the information is not very complex, and a small error can usually be corrected on the spot. Real-time AI interpreting and bilingual captions noticeably speed up communication in such cases, so Chinese managers no longer need to wait for an interpreter for every small task.

However, AI still has clear limits in the Chinese–Turkish language pair. It easily mishears accents and industry terms, struggles with irony, indirect expressions and context, and cannot consistently recognize Turkish personal and place names. In negotiations, contracts, legal and healthcare matters, labour disputes and external-facing speeches, a single mistranslation can cause real damage; in these situations we recommend a human interpreter.

02

The “escalation rule”: switch to a human interpreter when a workplace accident comes up

The first step is to assess the setting: meeting type, frequency, number of participants, ambient noise and risk level. We then select the right tool, enter the company name, product models, department names and frequently used terms into the system, and run a trial in a real meeting. After the trial, we adjust the terminology list, microphone placement and caption display based on recognition errors.

Once in use, we collect regular feedback from Chinese and Turkish employees and keep the terminology up to date. Transcripts of important meetings can be reviewed by an interpreter and archived. We also agree an “escalation rule” with you: when a meeting turns to a sensitive topic such as a contract, workplace accident or disciplinary matter, it switches to a remote or on-site human interpreter.

03

Noisy workshops and built-in microphones give poor results

Many AI tools process meeting audio in the cloud, and the servers may be located outside Türkiye and China. If a meeting involves customer information, employees' personal data or trade secrets, the tool's data storage and usage policy should be reviewed first. Türkiye has a Personal Data Protection Law (KVKK); processing employee data may create obligations such as providing notice and obtaining consent, and compliance matters should be assessed by a legal advisor.

A common mistake among Chinese clients is assuming that fluent AI output is an accurate translation, or using AI in external meetings that require a human interpreter. Another issue is equipment: capturing audio with a laptop's built-in microphone in a noisy production area naturally gives poor results. The right approach is to use AI as an everyday tool, together with a clear terminology list, a suitable microphone and a human interpreter as backup.

02 · Who it is for

Mixed teams with frequent internal meetings and limited budgets

01

Mixed Chinese–Turkish teams

Daily meetings at the factory or office, pre-shift briefings and project progress meetings. These meetings are frequent, their content largely repetitive and the risk relatively low. AI interpreting lets Chinese managers communicate directly with Turkish staff without waiting for an interpreter.

02

In-house training

Training on occupational safety, operations and company rules, where Turkish employees need captions to follow along. With bilingual captions, employees both listen and read, reducing information loss. Training recordings can also serve as an internal archive.

03

New teams on a limited budget

Teams that have just entered the Turkish market, with heavy day-to-day communication but for whom calling an interpreter every time is impractical. AI handles most everyday conversations, while human interpreters are reserved for critical situations. This combination keeps costs under control while protecting the quality of important communication.

03 · Scope

Tool setup, terminology settings and backup human interpreter

01

AI interpreting setup

We select and set up the right AI interpreting tool for your meeting environment. Tools differ in their Chinese–Turkish performance, cost and data policies. We make recommendations based on your devices, platform and confidentiality requirements.

02

Terminology and name settings

Company names, product names and industry terms are entered into the system to improve recognition accuracy. Turkish personal names, place names and abbreviations are where AI makes the most mistakes. The terminology list is updated as it is used.

03

Bilingual captions and transcripts

Chinese–Turkish captions are displayed during the meeting, and a bilingual transcript is produced afterwards. Transcripts help employees who could not attend learn what was discussed. As automatic transcripts may contain errors, important sections should be checked by a person.

04

Human review

Transcripts of important meetings can be reviewed by an interpreter and archived. The review corrects errors in figures, names and terms and flags passages with unclear meaning. A reviewed transcript is a more reliable internal reference.

05

Backup human interpreter

When the discussion becomes complex, you can switch to a remote or on-site human interpreter, for example when a contract, workplace accident or personnel issue unexpectedly comes up in a meeting. The switchover method is agreed in advance so the meeting continues with minimal disruption.

  • Meeting platform used or room sound system
  • Data confidentiality requirements
05 · Process

Assess the scenario, test it, and improve as you go

  1. 1

    Scenario assessment

We assess the meeting type and risk level to decide whether AI interpreting is suitable. We ask about the number of participants, accents and meeting content. Where it is not suitable, we recommend a human interpreter directly.

  2. 2

    Setup and testing

The terminology list and devices are configured and a trial run is carried out. The trial usually takes place in a real internal meeting. Based on the results, microphone placement and terminology are adjusted.

  3. 3

    Use

Real-time interpreting runs during the meeting while we monitor the results remotely. During the initial period of use, we collect participants' feedback. If there is a clear mistranslation, we flag it immediately.

  4. 4

    Review and improvement

The terminology list is updated based on feedback, and human review is added if needed. We regularly assess which meetings can continue with AI and which should move to a human interpreter. The goal is for the tool to genuinely lighten the load, not create new problems.

06 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can AI replace a human interpreter?

It can reduce reliance on human interpreters for everyday internal communication, but AI can misunderstand accents, context and specialist terms. For negotiations, contracts, legal or medical situations, we recommend a human interpreter. Our approach is not one-size-fits-all; we differentiate by risk level.

Is meeting content kept secure?

We choose tools and data storage methods according to your confidentiality requirements, and for sensitive meetings we recommend a human interpreter bound by an NDA. Some AI tools process audio on servers abroad, so it is important to understand the data policy before use. If personal data is involved, KVKK (Türkiye's Personal Data Protection Law) requirements must also be considered; consult your legal advisor on compliance matters.

Can accented speech be recognized?

Recognition quality is affected by accent, speaking speed and ambient noise. We run a trial first and, if needed, change the microphone or switch to a human interpreter. In noisy environments such as production areas, we recommend lapel or headset microphones.

What equipment do I need to buy?

In most cases, a computer or phone and a good-quality microphone are enough to get started. Meeting rooms may need a conference microphone and a projector or large screen for captions. We recommend a minimum configuration based on your existing equipment and help you avoid unnecessary purchases.

Can AI captions be used as training records?

They can be used as an internal reference; however, for records that may carry legal obligations, such as occupational safety training, we recommend human review and retention in line with the relevant regulations. Confirm the exact requirements with your occupational safety specialist or legal advisor. We can take on the review and translation of official training materials.

Will Turkish employees accept AI interpreting?

Most employees get used to it in daily meetings, especially once they see the captions. However, for conversations about performance, discipline or personal matters, a human interpreter is usually preferred. Explaining the purpose and how data is processed in advance builds trust.

Can we try it out first?

Yes. We generally recommend a trial in one or two real meetings before making a long-term decision. At the end of the trial, we provide an assessment of the results and suggestions for improvement.
