Brand naming

A brand name Turkish customers can read easily, remember and never misread

The pinyin names of Chinese brands entering the Turkish market are often hard for Turkish customers to read; some may even carry a negative or comical meaning in Turkish. Yeni İpekyolu's Chinese-Turkish team reviews your brand name for Turkish pronunciation habits and meaning, or proposes a new one, runs a preliminary search in the TÜRKPATENT (Turkish Patent and Trademark Office) database, checks the availability of the .com.tr domain and handles such as Instagram and TikTok, and writes a Turkish slogan, so you see the risks before printing packaging or running ads.

01 · Overview

The sound, meaning and registration of a Chinese brand name for the Turkish market

01

How does a Turk read the x, q and zh of pinyin?

Turkish uses the Latin alphabet, but letters are pronounced very differently from pinyin. Since x, q and w are not in the Turkish alphabet, a Turkish customer usually does not know how to read them; c is read like "je" in Turkish, j is rarely used, and combinations such as zh, ch and sh have no fixed pronunciation. As a result, the same brand name is said in different ways in stores, on the phone and in videos, making it harder for customers to recommend the brand to each other by its correct name.

We have several native Turkish speakers read the candidate names aloud without any explanation; we note how they are actually pronounced and assess whether they are memorable and easy to spell. Often there is no need to drop the original name; adapting the spelling to produce a similar sound in the Turkish alphabet, or choosing a short secondary name for the Turkish market, may be enough. The final recommendation comes with a Chinese explanation, so you can easily explain to headquarters in China why a change is needed.

02

A name with bad connotations in Turkish is riskier than one that is hard to read

Some syllable combinations happen to match an everyday Turkish word; it may be a crude word, a word with a negative meaning, or a phrase mocked in young people's internet slang. Chinese teams usually cannot spot these issues on their own, because they do not appear in standard dictionaries. Once a brand is ridiculed on social media, jokes in the comments can spread faster than the advertising, and renaming later is very costly.

That is why our check goes beyond dictionary meaning; we also examine sound-alikes, slang, regional usage and whether the name is too similar to well-known brands in Turkey. For B2B brands targeting companies, we also check whether the name looks professional on LinkedIn and in industry settings. A risk level and rationale are given for each candidate name; your team makes the final decision.

03

Trademark registration, .com.tr domain and social accounts: all three together

A trademark registered in China is generally not automatically protected in Turkey; you need to apply to TÜRKPATENT or designate Turkey through international registration. We run a preliminary search in TÜRKPATENT's public database for identical or similar marks and translate the results into Chinese. A preliminary search does not replace an official search opinion; whether to file, and in which classes, should be decided by an authorized trademark attorney or lawyer in Turkey.

At the same time, we check whether the .com.tr and .com domains and the usernames on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X are available. Turkish customers usually look brands up on Instagram and judge their trustworthiness from the profile; if the handle matching your brand name is already taken, an alternative with an addition should be considered in advance. Application requirements for .com.tr domains may change; confirm the current rules with the relevant authority.

04

A Turkish slogan should be shorter than a translation of the Chinese one

Many Chinese companies translate their Chinese slogan directly into Turkish; the result is a long sentence that sounds like a user manual. A Turkish slogan should usually be short, close to everyday speech and easy to use in videos and on packaging, touching on values Turkish customers care about such as quality, durability, after-sales service and value for money. We propose several slogans in different directions, each with its literal Chinese meaning and where to use it.

What we ask you to prepare in advance: your current brand name and its Chinese meaning, product category, target customer (consumers or businesses), whether the brand is registered in China or other countries, and the brand image you want to convey. If you have a list of competitors, share it too; it makes it easier for us to avoid similar names. Once the direction is clear, we can also support you with Turkish packaging copy and social media bios.

02 · Who it is for

Chinese companies preparing to introduce their brand to Turkish customers

01

Chinese consumer brands newly entering Turkey

Brands selling to Turkish consumers, such as home appliances, phone accessories, cosmetics and apparel, need names that are easy to read and search for in stores, in e-commerce and on social media. We check whether the original name is easy to say in Turkish and whether it has any negative meaning. Where needed, we propose an adaptation for the Turkish market.

02

Sellers opening stores on Trendyol and Hepsiburada

On Turkish marketplaces, customers usually find a store by searching for the brand name; a name that is hard to spell keeps customers from reaching the brand. We check the name for search and spelling, and suggest how to write the store name and product titles. For marketplaces' brand authorization requirements, follow the platform's current rules.

03

B2B brands selling to Turkish companies

In sectors such as industrial equipment, building materials and renewable energy, buyers are mostly Turkish companies and dealers. The name needs to look professional and trustworthy in quotations, at trade fairs and on LinkedIn. We assess the impression the name leaves in its industry context.

04

Companies launching a Turkey-specific sub-brand or product line

Some companies want a separate product line name or sub-brand for the Turkish market. We propose several candidate names and check trademark, domain and social handle availability at the same time. That way, a truly usable name is chosen from the very start.

03 · Scope

Five naming services, from pronunciation test to slogan

01

Turkish pronunciation test

We have several native Turkish speakers read the candidate names and record how they are actually pronounced. We assess memorability and ease of spelling. Where needed, we suggest a spelling adaptation.

02

Meaning and connotation check

We examine the name's dictionary meaning in Turkish, sound-alikes, and usage in slang and internet language. We also compare its similarity to existing brands in Turkey. A risk note is given for each name.

03

TÜRKPATENT preliminary search

We search the TÜRKPATENT public database for identical or similar marks and translate the results into Chinese. A preliminary search does not replace an official legal opinion. For the official application, we recommend working with a trademark attorney in Turkey.

04

Domain and social handle check

We check the availability of .com.tr and .com domains and of Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X usernames. If they are taken, we suggest alternative spellings. For domain application requirements, follow the current rules of the relevant authority.

05

Turkish slogan

We write several short Turkish slogans based on your brand positioning. Each comes with its literal Chinese meaning and where to use it. They can be used on packaging, in videos and in social media bios.

05 · Process

Reaching a name usable in Turkey in four steps

  1. 1

Getting to know the brand and target customer

We discuss your brand positioning, product category and target customer in Chinese. We learn about the current name and existing registrations. Your main sales channels in Turkey are clarified.

  2. 2

    Candidate names and pronunciation test

The original name is reviewed or new candidate names are proposed. Native Turkish speakers check pronunciation and meaning. Names carrying clear risks are eliminated.

  3. 3

Preliminary trademark, domain and handle check

For the remaining names, a TÜRKPATENT preliminary search and domain and social handle checks are carried out. The results are collected in a comparison table in Chinese. The usability status of each name is stated.

  4. 4

    Chinese report and slogan

A Chinese report is delivered with the recommended names, their rationale and Turkish slogans. It can be presented at a meeting with your headquarters. After the decision, we support communication with your trademark attorney in Turkey.

06 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Our brand is registered in China; do we also need to register it in Turkey?

Usually yes. Trademark protection is territorial; a registration in China is not automatically valid in Turkey. You can apply directly to TÜRKPATENT or designate Turkey through international registration. Consult an authorized trademark attorney or lawyer in Turkey on which route suits you.

Do we necessarily have to change our name for Turkey?

No, not always. In most cases the original name can be kept; a spelling adaptation or a short secondary name is enough. We recommend a change if the name carries a clear negative meaning in Turkish or conflicts with an existing brand. Your team makes the final decision.

Does a TÜRKPATENT preliminary search guarantee registration?

No. A preliminary search only checks the public database for identical or similar marks and helps you rule out obvious conflicts in advance. The examination outcome and third-party oppositions cannot be guaranteed beforehand. For the official search and application, work with a trademark attorney.

Why check Instagram and TikTok usernames?

Turkish customers often look brands up on Instagram and judge their trustworthiness from the profile; TikTok and YouTube are also important discovery channels. If the handle matching your brand name belongs to someone else, customers may end up at the wrong account. Checking handle availability from the start keeps the name, domain and account consistent.

Can a foreign company get a .com.tr domain?

Application requirements and required documents for .com.tr domains have changed over time; they are usually tied to a trademark or company presence in Turkey. We check whether the name is available and explain the general requirements. For the exact requirements, follow the current rules of the relevant authority.

Can a Turkish slogan be translated directly from Chinese?

It can be a starting point, but a literal translation usually produces a long or unnatural sentence. Starting from the meaning of the Chinese slogan, we rewrite a short line that suits Turkish customers. Each comes with a back-translation into Chinese for headquarters' approval.

Can we have a name we already use checked?

Yes. Even if the brand has already started selling in Turkey, a pronunciation and meaning check and a preliminary trademark and handle search can be carried out. If issues are found, we explain the adaptation options available. The decision on whether to make changes is yours.
